Promoting affordable Internet access for all Burundians: A lever for an inclusive Information Society and the development of ICT-related activities In an increasingly connected world, Internet access has become a fundamental need, on par with water or electricity. Yet, many Burundians remain digitally excluded due to the high cost of Internet services and necessary equipment. This theme highlights the urgent need to make the Internet financially accessible to all segments of the Burundian population, whether in urban or rural areas. Affordable Internet is not just a communication tool—it is a true driver of development. It enables: Access to information and education: online learning, educational resources, government information. Economic development: job creation, e-commerce, digital entrepreneurship. Social inclusion: citizen participation, online public services, social connectivity. Technological innovation: emergence of local startups, development of solutions tailored to the Burundian context. By making the Internet accessible to everyone, Burundi lays the foundation for an inclusive Information Society, where every citizen, regardless of their location or income level, can actively participate in building a prosperous digital future.
East Africa IGF 2013 - East Africa Internet Governance Forum

Sixth annual edition of the East Africa Internet Governance Forum, held on August 13-14, 2013 in Bujumbura, Burundi, at the Royal Palace Hotel. Organized on a rotational basis among East African Community (EAC) member states, this edition's theme was: "Harnessing Multi-stakeholderism in Contributing towards Internet growth and Sustainable Development in East Africa". Sessions covered national IGF reports (Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda), infrastructure and broadband access, accessibility, diversity and online content, naming and addressing issues (IPv6 migration, new gTLDs, dotAfrica), and user protection online.

Fourth Internet Governance Forum in Burundi, held on August 1, 2013 in Bujumbura, under the high patronage of the Ministry in charge of ICTs. The main theme was: "Contribution of ICTs to Sustainable Development in Burundi: Synergy of ICT Sector Stakeholders". Discussions covered the IGF 2013 process, the Internet Exchange Point (IXP) project, the BBS fiber optic project, the E-Governance project (COM.GOV), and stakeholder synergy for a better contribution of the Internet to Burundi's sustainable development.

Third Internet Governance Forum in Burundi, held on July 12, 2012 in Bujumbura, under the high patronage of the Ministry in charge of ICTs. Discussions covered the IGF process and new developments (6th IGF in Nairobi, ISOC and ICANN news), the BBS fiber optic project, the legal and regulatory framework for ICTs, Internet security (IPv4/IPv6, DNS/DNSSEC), the use of the Internet in education, and the promotion of good governance for Burundi's socio-economic development.

IGF Burundi 2011

Second Internet Governance Forum in Burundi, held on August 16, 2011 in Bujumbura, under the high patronage of the Ministry in charge of ICTs. Discussions focused on the IGF process, the BBS fiber optic network project, ICT challenges and issues for Burundi, the use of ICTs in education (E-Learning), and the promotion of ICTs in the private sector. The event was marked by the presence of the then Burundian Minister of ICTs.

The first Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Burundi was held on September 1-2, 2009, in Bujumbura. This founding event brought together stakeholders around the country's major digital issues. Discussions focused on the global IGF process, infrastructure development to bridge the digital divide in Burundi, legislative and regulatory challenges of the Internet, and the opportunities offered by digital technology for the economic, political, social, and cultural development of Burundi.
